The garden is increasingly becoming an extension of the home, where people also cook and eat. Sjoerd Bos, sales manager at Rubio Monocoat Netherlands, sees this reflected in his field. “The garden is no longer two fences with a piece of grass. We see a growing use of wood in applications such as tables, decking and canopies. With that also increases the demand for a finish that can withstand outdoor conditions and suits the use.”

With DuroGrit, Rubio Monocoat offers a single-layer finish for outdoor applications. According to Bos, the product is in line with the growing use of wood in the garden, where the natural, untreated look must be preserved. “Wood plays an important role in this, but requires protection that goes beyond aesthetics alone,” says Bos.
Outdoor kitchens require a different approach than interior applications. Materials are continuously stressed by moisture, temperature changes and UV radiation. At the same time, in many projects the desire remains to leave the pattern of the wood grains visible. According to Bos, the difference of DuroGrit with paint systems lies in that approach. “You don't want to seal up the wood, but preserve its characteristic appearance. DuroGrit acts as a breathable system that moves with the wood, making it less likely to crack with moisture and temperature changes and easier to maintain.”

The oil protects the surface while maintaining its natural appearance and slightly deepens the color, similar to wet wood. The patented FibreGrit technology, where wood fibers reinforce the structure, contributes to uv-resistance and durability. The application is not limited to the outdoor kitchen itself. Decking, fences and wall cladding are also finished with the same system, so that components within a project fit together.
DuroGrit is a guaranteed one-coat system, solvent-free. There are less stringent requirements for outdoor products, but Rubio Monocoat uses the same standards as indoors. “Among other things, that means working completely solvent-free.” This makes the system safe to use, both for the end user and the professional on the shop floor.

Processing DuroGrit determines the final appearance and requires a professional approach. “It is not a DIY product, like a standard stain,” says Bos. “Preparation, sanding and the right tools make all the difference in the final result.” According to him, that's also where the role of the professional lies. “In professional application, you see that those steps are performed consistently. That ensures an even surface with no deposits and a finish that matches the level of the project.”
Rubio Monocoat actively supports this way of working. Knowledge about preparation, processing and maintenance is shared with professionals, including through guidance and practical information. With this, the focus is emphatically on the professional market and on projects where quality in execution and final appearance come together.
