The wine cabinet has taken its place nicely among the kitchen appliances. To such an extent even that when talking about a new kitchen, and thus which appliances are all needed, the wine cabinet is immediately included in the story. That every new kitchen will immediately include a wine cabinet, we are not there (yet). But there is no doubt that considerable strides have been made in technology and design in recent years.
Of course, the popularity of the wine cabinet is easily read from the sales figures of the various manufacturers. But an additional measure is the activity undertaken by these manufacturers to develop new appliances with a wide range of sizes (widths, heights, number of bottles), temperature zones (one, two, three) and other features needed to preserve the bottles of wine in the best possible way. Another important indicator is the amount of international design awards given out each year. The term is a bit misleading because the judges of these awards really do look beyond just appearance. Usability, durability, design, each pillar plays its part in the judging. Wine cabinets from different manufacturers have regularly won awards in recent years. A sign that these manufacturers put a lot of effort into producing the best of the best so that wine lovers from all over the world can store and thus serve their wine in the best conditions.
The optimal conditions. This is what consumers look for when they wish to purchase a wine cabinet. Is it for an extensive collection or for "just" a few bottles? There is always an appropriate model available. But all must take care of the bottles of wine and thus the
create and maintain ideal lying and storage conditions. The right temperature is an important consideration, especially since it varies from color to color. And since most collections consist of a healthy mix of red, white and rosé, manufacturers offer models that handle one and often two temperature zones. Individually adjustable and customizable. And vibration and sunlight are also culprits that wine lovers want to keep out. So capturing and neutralizing vibration is a constant message and one that product developers are eager to address. Even the hinges of a wine cabinet door are meticulously considered to avoid even the slightest vibration. After all, the door has to open once in a while, but preferably in a quiet way without vibrations. And without a loud slamming door. The door that also has to keep out UV light. Multifunctionality all round.
Keeping bottles in the ideal conditions to serve them perfectly is, of course, a very important issue. But more and more, that perfect serving is also a breaking point for choosing one model of wine cabinet or another. Literally diving into the wine cellar to retrieve that gem of a wine from under the dust, we may not do it anymore. But ambience and coziness and therefore experience remain important. A wine closet doesn't mean the experience goes away. It starts when the guests enter. Most wine cabinets come with excellent lighting that beautifully highlights the cabinet and its contents. Admiring and choosing the wine can be done through the glass door or, if avoiding endless lingering, by opening the door and gently sliding the shelves forward. We even see wine cabinets that have a pouring and serving platform at the perfect working height. A platform on which a few glasses and the bottle or carafe can stand nicely while pouring the chosen wine. Once the wine is served, the door can nicely close to give the bottles of wine the desired rest again. Fans of a little explanation about the chosen wine do not have to dive into an encyclopedia or study for days beforehand. After all, wine lovers can turn to one of the well-known apps that collect all the interesting facts about the wine, the estate, the grape and the like. What's more, some wine cabinets have integrated a connection with one of the apps so that the smartphone can be stored away and a real chat can be had while tasting (hopefully) the perfect wine at the perfect temperature.
