Light takes the kitchen to the next level

Good lighting does what it's supposed to do; bad lighting stands out once more. The latter is always out of the question, so too when it comes to a new kitchen. But how do you achieve optimal lighting?

Kitchens are total projects. A laundry list of questions, a carload of information, quite a sandwich of decisions. After all, tastes differ, and the answers to those questions lead the kitchen planner to the ultimate kitchen. Perfectly tailored to the customer. His or her dream kitchen.

One topic that has been clearly on the rise in recent years and this trend will continue in 2022 is lighting in the kitchen. True, there has always been lighting in the kitchen. But where the kitchen used to be tucked away in a room separate, it now increasingly merges with the living room into one. More so, the kitchen has become the most important room in a home. The beating heart, the showpiece. And no one wants bad lighting there, right?

Different types

Lighting plays an incredibly important role in the atmosphere of the home, including the kitchen. First and foremost, you need light to see what you are doing. Logical. But in general, we talk about three main types of lighting in a kitchen. Ideally, all three should be present. You get perfect lighting in your kitchen when general lighting, task lighting and mood lighting work together. The golden tip: have a lighting plan drawn up by a lighting specialist. Based on the plan of the kitchen and the client's questions, requirements and wishes, they will draw up a lighting plan.

Specialist work

General lighting is the foundation in the kitchen. Often this is a central point from which much of the kitchen is illuminated. General lighting can be done in a variety of ways. A (striking) pendant fixture, recessed spotlights in the ceiling and so on. As kitchen and living room increasingly merge into one, it is possible to use the same fixtures to create a visual unity. An eye-catching fixture is also an instant eye-catcher.

With task lighting, we usually talk about lighting the work surface. An annoying shadow arises quickly. The upper cabinets, you yourself or yet another jammer. A few spotlights under the kitchen cabinets solve this.

Last but not least, ambient lighting. A kitchen has become a multipurpose room. The three meals, working from home, children's homework, hobbies, cozy dinners with family and friends. Each situation is different and requires a different kind of light.

Dare to stand out

If a lighting plan is in place, then filling it in with fixtures to your liking begins. There again, the choice is enormous but the lighting specialist can certainly lend a hand. It might be useful to choose lighting that is easy to clean. After all, a kitchen is susceptible to grease deposits or other food residues, and some materials are easier to clean than others. And perhaps the trend of 2022: dare to stand out. Multiple fixtures next to each other at different heights, striking colors or shapes, over the top, ... It is possible and allowed in 2022.
