Vision 2040: ‘The kitchen (market) is becoming smarter, more sustainable, and more personalized’

Looking ahead, we see a kitchen market that is inextricably linked to broader changes in housing, technology, and consumer behavior. According to Ofra Korthuis, account manager for the kitchen retail channel at MHK, the kitchen has long since ceased to be merely a practical space. “People want a beautiful and modern living space,” he says. This trend is continuing. The kitchen of 2040 will be smarter and more sustainable, but above all, more personalized.

The kitchen industry is constantly evolving as consumers view their homes differently. Open kitchens, kitchen islands, and custom designs are already clear examples of this. The kitchen is increasingly becoming part of the living space: a place to cook, eat, entertain guests, and spend time together.

By 2040, that multifunctional role will be even more pronounced. Korthuis expects the kitchen to become even more clearly the heart of the home. “The kitchen will likely be smart, sustainable, and multifunctional,” he says. Technological development plays a major role in this. Appliances are becoming smarter and, with the help of artificial intelligence, are able to perform tasks more and more independently. Think of ovens, refrigerators, and other appliances that are not only controlled via apps but also adapt to the user’s needs.

At the same time, sustainability is becoming more important. Consumers are increasingly opting for energy-efficient appliances and eco-friendly materials. According to Korthuis, these developments are driven by “technological progress, changing living preferences, and a greater focus on the environment.” As a result, sustainability is no longer just a standalone selling point, but an integral part of design, production, and sales. The kitchen of 2040 will therefore not only be high-tech but also designed with greater sustainability in mind.

The showroom will remain, but it will change

The way kitchens are sold is also changing. Korthuis expects that by 2040, the sales process will largely begin digitally. “Customers will research online and design their kitchens using 3D or VR technology,” he says. Smart software and AI will make that process faster, simpler, and more personalized.

The role of the showroom is changing. “It’s becoming a place for advice and hands-on experience.” Customers want to feel the materials, experience the layouts, and feel confident in their choices. As a result, salespeople are increasingly taking on the role of advisors. Especially as kitchens become more technical and require more customization, expert guidance remains important.

For specialty kitchen retailers, the path forward is clear. Investing in digital technology—such as 3D design and online consulting—is essential to remaining relevant. But just as important is the ability to provide personalized guidance to customers and to design the showroom in a way that allows them to truly experience the kitchen. “Companies that invest in sustainability and online visibility will remain more relevant in the future,” says Korthuis.

Of course, 2040 isn’t entirely predictable. Economic developments, new technologies, changing housing trends, and government regulations can all influence the market. That’s precisely why staying up to date is essential. “By delving into technology and sustainability, I also stay up to date on changes in the kitchen market.”

The kitchen market of 2040 will therefore require agility. Those who can successfully combine technology, sustainability, customer experience, and personalized advice will remain valuable even in a changing market. Korthuis concludes: “For independent kitchen entrepreneurs, collaborating within a larger purchasing or marketing organization can be strategically attractive. It’s a way to strengthen their position in an industry that continues to evolve.”
