The invisible revolution in the kitchen

Always fun to look ahead, right? For example, to the year 2040. And what do we see in the kitchen then? Right: lots of fast and smart appliances, AI and fully automated processes. Yet according to Jesse Struis, sales manager at Caressi, one of the most underestimated developments is closer to home. Literally. “The faucet and sink are used more often every day than an oven, but rarely get the attention they deserve.”

Jesse Struis is responsible for sales at Caressi.

Caressi is a Dutch brand focused on designing and supplying sinks, kitchen taps and related accessories for kitchens. The company combines sleek design with functionality and durability, aiming to provide high-quality and user-friendly kitchen solutions.

While consumers are seduced by high-tech ovens and connected refrigerators, innovations in faucets and sinks often remain under the radar. Unjustified, Struis believes. He points to features such as an ECO mode, which saves water while creating a gentle spray, or an adjustable perlator that prevents splashing. “Those kinds of innovations are already there, but are often underestimated,” he says.”

Especially in a market where differentiation is becoming increasingly difficult, this is an opportunity for kitchen specialty stores. Not by showing more technology, but by better explaining what seemingly simple products actually add to comfort and ease of use.

Experience becomes leading, technology disappears from the picture

In recent years, the kitchen has become the heart of the home. This development continues. Functionality is not disappearing, but it is becoming less visible. Appliances are becoming smarter and taking work out of your hands, while the space itself should exude tranquility and emotion. “The feeling at the kitchen when you come home or have dinner together has to be right,” he says.”

In 2040, therefore, it is less about showcasing technical gadgets and more about material, interaction and appearance. Technology remains essential, but shifts to the background. Invisible innovation will become the norm. For product development, this means that technology supports experience, not the other way around.

Water as a resource to be managed

A notable theme in Struis’ vision is water. Where energy management is now commonplace, he expects water use to be just as consciously managed in the future. Think monitoring via sensors and apps, or even systems to reuse water. For suppliers and kitchen builders, that requires forward thinking. “Hygiene, environment and functionality will remain leading, but will be complemented by measurability and control. The faucet is changing from a natural tapping point to a smart hub within the household,” says Struis.

Consequently, the consumer of 2040 is no longer content with visible technology, noisy equipment or unsustainable materials. Fixed setups are also up for debate. Flexibility will become a core value: adjustable working heights, multifunctional islands and adaptable components

“Sustainability also takes on a broader meaning,” Struis explains. “Not only material choice counts, but also lifespan, updateability of parts and traceability of products. Recirculability will probably be the norm by then.”

Strategic choice for 2026

For kitchen retailers who want to think ahead now, the task is clear: “Bring technology, experience, sustainability, longevity and flexibility together into one story. These are the themes that are already in play today and will become decisive toward 2040,” Struis concludes.

Therefore, the kitchen of 2040 will not be dominated by visible high-tech, but by smart, quiet solutions that improve everyday use without imposing themselves. Those who already have an eye for this invisible revolution are building lasting relevance.
