For years Dekker Zevenhuizen has not only looked at the sustainability level of each production process but also at the green character of the end products themselves. In 2012 Dekker brought the patented Greengridz on the market, the sustainable alternative for plywood. Now two sustainable high-tech materials have been added to that, which are comparable to composite stone in terms of properties. Ben van Elk, responsible for marketing, says, "Obsidiana and Cosmolite are new kitchen worktops made from recycled glass or recycled minerals, respectively. Moreover, they can be 100% reused."
These striking innovations will certainly appeal to the interior or kitchen designer because the end user -the consumer- is now also asking for them. After all, the theme of "sustainability" has definitely landed there, so there had to be a green answer. And now there is. With thanks to Dekker Zevenhuizen. Today's kitchen worktop is fully circular.
"This new high-tech material for 100% consists of recycled glass and resin. From the compressed material, blocks are made and sheets are cut that can then be worked into a kitchen worktop," Ben says. "Not just once but endlessly. Countless times, in other words. Because, this composite can be reused indefinitely. You can't get more sustainable."
Ben explains that Obsidiana is available in a 12 mm board thickness and in six vibrant colors. "These six colors have quiet patterns. They will definitely appeal to the conscious voter with taste. Volcano Cloud, Volcano Grey, Volcano Light, Volcano Pierre Bleue, Volcano Pearl and Volcano Dark."
When Ben is asked if "industrial waste can also be beautiful," his answer is clear. "It's a resounding 'Yes,'" he says. "If we look at the new Cosmolite collection: it consists of 100% of minerals from industrial waste sourced from the stone industry, and resin. It has exactly the same properties as traditional composite stone but is 100% recyclable. So again, this is sustainability in optima forma." And, it looks great, too. Ben explains that from the base material the slabs are pressed one by one. "This creates beautiful, long-veined patterns. We process these slabs into kitchen countertops. So, as with Obsidiana, we then have a kitchen worktop in our hands that can be recycled after use. Waste is definitely a thing of the past."
Cosmolite is available in 12 mm and available in eight concrete and marble-look colors. "The color palette consists of eight variants that range from light to dark and from calm to veined. As far as I'm concerned, this is a must-have for any consumer who also -like us- considers sustainability an important issue. And, that you literally put that into practice."
Greengridz® is an innovative, award-winning and patented core material for kitchen countertops that can be laminated with TopLaminate®, DecorTop® or FENIX®. Greengridz® is more resistant to impact and water than plywood. It is also more stable, lighter and more affordable. Fewer raw materials are needed to produce Greengridz® compared to traditional countertops. The ecological footprint is smaller. The production process is also green: the product is FSC and Carb-2 certified. Because Greengridz® is lightweight, less fuel is needed to transport it. This leads to lower CO2 emissions.
